Things I’ve Heard From Leaders - 2

“How can you tell if equity and inclusion work is making a difference?”

👂Things I’ve Heard From Leaders - Part 2

You can, of course, track data such as pay equity, employee retention, diversity, parental leave, etc. And those are good indicators. Another good way to track whether your equity and inclusion work is making a difference is by doing short, anonymous surveys with your team (although this can be hard to do at smaller companies). Note: these surveys have to be 100% anonymous if you want real, honest feedback.

Ask questions such as:

  • Do you know who to report any issues to?

  • Do you feel safe/ comfortable reporting to that person(s)?

  • Do you think that “housekeeping” tasks are evenly distributed among team members?

  • Have you ever felt uncomfortable or unsafe in the workplace? (and not simply in a “that was awkward” way)

  • Do you feel heard and listened to when you speak with leadership and/or colleagues?

  • Are there people on your team you trust to speak out when something said doesn’t feel right?

For some questions you can use a scale so that the next time you send out that survey, you can measure any changes. And note that many of these sample questions require follow up questions.
